There is general agreement in European capitals that Konrad Adenauer, having won his great victory in the elections, will encounter no obstacles at home when he proceeds to incorporate West Germany in the Atlantic community. Of course Adenauer was greatly helped by the support of the U.S. Neutralist tendencies in the rest of Europe are stimulated when the U.S. shows favors to a Germany which half the Continent fears. The international third force, made up of Socialist and other anti-Communist but not clerical or reactionary elements, which American liberals had hoped would carry on the struggle against Russia from a progressive position has been smashed by the German elections.
