Cancer of the colon is responsible for more deaths than any other single form of cancer; nearly 50,000 Americans will die of it this year. An uncounted number of these deaths can be charged to irresponsible laxative advertising. Persistent change in bowel habits after "the age of thirty-five, however, is often a symptom of cancer; what is needed for middle age irregularity is not a laxative but a physical checkup. A mild laxative is proper treatment for occasional constipation. Auto-intoxication is a serious condition, but it occurs as the result of kidney failure, not constipation; neither toxins nor anything else, except water, is absorbed through the lining of man's large intestine.
