At the time of elections, the importance of the office of Vice-President of the United States is often underestimated. One should never forget, however, that the Vice-President has a good chance of being elevated to the Presidency during his term of office. The nominee for the Presidency is always given free rein to choose who shall make the race with him. This year the grounds for his decision were obvious in each case. California was a doubtful state with a large electoral vote; the Republicans hoped that a native son would carry the state for the ticket.
