Robert B. Garis writes from London about a Sadler's Wells performance of "Cosi Fan Tutte" which showed the two sides of the question of opera in English with complete clarity. "The recitatives were excellent; one heard every word, and knew what was going on," though one also acquired, incidentally, "a lucid insight into the failings of diction, intonation, and acting of the average opera star. It seems to Garis that if the opera had been sung in Italian the singers would have risen to the occasion, put on a little more dignity and grace and elegance . . . and given a more defined performance."
