The name of Kurt Schumacher was known to only a few Germans. The radio announcement of his sudden death, on August 21, plunged the whole country into gloom. Few men have been buried with so many tears as this leader of the Social Democratic Party of West Germany. One of the most important figures of post-war Europe, Schumacher was a miracle of energy and will in a broken body. He worked without pause from six o'clock in the morning to midnight. He hurried from one meeting to another. He often followed a debate in Parliament for twelve hours straight. He drove his party tirelessly toward higher and higher goals.
