The recent naval maneuvers conducted by North Atlantic treaty Organization, Operation Mainbrace, in the waters around Norway and Denmark caused considerable misgivings, particularly in Denmark, before they started, some tense moments while they lasted, and general relief when they were over. One reason is obvious. Allied naval forces were operating in the Baltic as far east as the island of Bornholm. When the Russians left Bornholm, Denmark in 1946 the Danish government promised them explicitly that it would use only Danish troops to defend the island.
