The New York City Ballet presented no new works during `the first week of its recent season at City Center; but some of the old ones had a new beauty that made them appear "as fresh and glistening as creation itself." The performances now gave the impression of something completely achieved-this even when, in "Serenade," lines were not straight, or when, in "Symphony in C,,' a dancer was not suited to his part. The role of the fairy calls for precisely the physical intensity in dancing and the dark dramatic power that Maria Talichief has; and her performance of it is still the best thing she has done.
