A major political and economic crisis is overdue in Austria. It has been held off mainly by the belief that the four-power occupation would soon end. The latest Soviet maneuvers against a state treaty have now delayed the end indefinitely, and trouble lies ahead. The economy is compounded of such elements as rising prices and frozen wages, increasing unemployment, communist-led strikes, differences within the governing Catholic-Socialist coalition, and the rapid growth of new ultra-nationalistic but pro-Soviet political groups.
