This article critically examines books "H. L. Mencken: A Portrait From Memory," by Charles Angoff and "Minority Report: H. L. Mencken's Notebooks." The old man is dead, and the reminiscences and table, scrapings are beginning to come in. Not many can equal the memories of Angoff, who worked on the book "Mercury," in its best years, but his diligent reportage of the philosopher H.L. Mencken's peccadilloes and comments, edited for shock quality, becomes tedious after a while, like the chatter of a too-fond parent who insists on telling people all clever remarks of his little boy.
