Out of the Chinese civil war there came the communist thesis that the U.S. is the enemy of the Chinese nation. The Chinese regime worked from the beginning to fix that belief in the popular mind and energetically exploited the Korean War to that end. Then the U.S. itself crowned Chinese efforts by signing a military pact with the Nationalists on Formosa. The U.S. has likewise left no doubt in the minds of other Asians of its attitude toward China. When it is authoritatively stated that three times in two years U.S. stood on the "brink of war" with China, no room for doubt remains.
