The materials of the motion picture "Picnic" are malevolent. The handsome, good-natured stranger is the kind of danger that keeps a responsible psychiatrist awake nights. The pretty daughter, trapped in her own obvious prettiness, and the aging schoolteacher, so desperate she will crawl on hands and knees toward the town's least eligible bachelor, are case studies in the frustration that breeds violence. The direction, as opposed to the style of the picture, is better than average and could be better still. Actors William Holden, Kim Novak and Betty Field have a secure feeling for the people they are supposed to be.
