The characters of Paddy Chayefsky's play " The Middle of the Night," performed by ANTA Theater, are called "The Mother," "The Girl," "The Manufacturer," "The Neighbor," etc. In other words, they are broad types. Chayefsky is writing about "average" people-hardly distinguishable from thousands of middle-class people one rubs shoulders with every day. The moral of the play is that people ought to follow the impulse of their normal instincts-provided there is affection and mutual need-and reject the petty considerations of customary prejudices.
