One thing that was extraordinary at musician Victoria' de Los Angeles' first recitals in the U.S. five years ago was how in the very first phrase she produced sounds as effortlessly secure and lovely as those one heard the rest of the evening. And this was true again at her recent recital: there was no warming up, no working off of nervousness in the opening performance of Mozart's "Exultate Jubilate," but instead a completely secure delivery of sustained, melodic phrases and florid passages right from the start. With only one difference: the lusciousness the voice had throughout its range five years ago was now gone from the top. But it still made the lower range a delight to the ear.
