This article presents information on the proposal given by Harry S. Truman, President of the U.S. to send an ambassador to Vatican City. The proposal was vehemently debated in the House of Representatives. Lewis C. Levin of Pennsylvania, a leader of the Native American Party, spearheaded the opposition. He opined that the proposal was more or less dictated by a desire to attract the votes of catholic U.S. citizens. Levin also opined that no public benefit would come out from this embassy. However, when the proposal was put up in the House, the appropriation for an embassy was approved, 137 to 15.
