While the world continues to totter on the brink of the atomic-war abyss, an increasing number of dedicated people are seeking to snatch the atom from the bomb and to place it where it belongs— in the home to make light and heat, in the factory to increase the world's goods, in the medical laboratory to fight disease and extend human life, in the desert to transform waste into wheat. The crucial nature of the choice that people must make is underscored by almost daily developments. As some scientists continue to warn of the as yet unfathomed dangers of atomic fall-out, others draw plans for the harnessing of atomic power for peaceful purposes.
