Joseph Hayes's "The Desperate Hours" (Barrymore Theater), which is a novel passing across the stage on its way to Hollywood. The play is a pretty piece of desperation: a trio of escaped convicts has gone to earth in the suburban house of an average family, and the problem is to flush them out of there so they can be captured or killed without serious damage to their unwilling hosts. Since one of the villains is a lunatic and another a mental deficient with a liquor problem, and since the family includes a pretty girl in her late teens and a boys of twelve with delusions of heroism, the level of excitement can be maintained at a very high pitch.
