This article discusses the book "Red Design for the Americas: Guatemalan Prelude," by Daniel James. James tries to show that the Communists, through their infiltration of the nationalist parties and government offices and their control of the labor and peasant movements, almost succeeded in taking over Guatemala. Though he has a good word for small democratic groups in Guatemala as the National Union of Free Workers, which opposed Communist control of the labor movement, and advocates a "progressive" American policy toward Guatemala, Mr. James is clearly, in the camp of Guatemalan reaction.
