This article discusses the book "Transformation: The Story of Modern Puerto Rico," by Earl Parker Hanson. "Transformation" gives a graphic and accurate story of Puerto Rico during the depression. Hanson puts his hope in Munoz's Operation Bootstrap, under which industry has been attracted to the island by remission of taxes, cheap factory buildings, low wages, and access to the greatest consumers' market in the world. Hanson's assertion that Puerto Rico's status corresponds to that of India or Indonesia is misleading.
