The article provides information about the books "The Letters of Benjamin Franklin and Jane Mecom," edited by Carl Van Doren. The book contains letters exchanged by scientist and writer Franklin and his favorite sister between 1727 and 1790. Jane gives the impression of having been an insufferably dull woman, at least on paper, and Franklin's replies are correspondingly prosy and domestic. There are occasional passages of interest, but for the most part the letters deal with the minutiae of family affairs. "Once More the Thunderer," by Henry Beetle Hough contains stories and anecdotes of life in a New England town.
