The article discusses the extraordinary settlement reached by General Motors and United Automobiles Workers on a five year contract. After initial apprehensions regarding long duration contract, union is finally worked up. The contract marked as "historic" by many people, based its negotiation with union leaders on little difficulties of pension, wages and other economic issues. The company though initially decided to stand firmly against the union shop demanded by U.S. labor leader Walter Philip Reuther, retreated from the position and paved the way for the union's acceptance of a five year contract. The company granted a modified union shop in return for five years of uninterrupted production.
