When William Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra arrived for their annual Carnegie Hall, Orono, Maine concert, they carried in their brief cases the score and parts for an unusually fascinating work, Anton Webern's "Six Pieces" for orchestra, which had never been played in New York. The "Six Pieces" sound even better in the concert hall than they do on the recordings, for in a hail they can occupy real, as opposed to illusory, space. Another visiting orchestra, the Philadelphia, brought with it to Carnegie Hall on two occasions some other interesting new works. The first of these, Virgil Thomson's recent transcriptions of the Brahms Op. 122 Chorale Preludes, turned out to be beautiful.
