This article presents a brief information on the book "Venice Observed," by Mary McCarthy. As hinted on the cover, the intrepid McCarthy will not take second place to any city or old masters; this is to be a bout. Bursting with research, laden with notebooks, goaded by deadlines, she doughtily matches herself against Venice, Italy, the reprobate of cities. The book is one of those synthetic spectaculars produced by publishers at this season, which is not quite literature, not quite art, not quite travel, but definitely is a gift-book.
