For 200 years excavations have been going on in Italy, but much of the early work was done either by vandals or by unscientific, haphazard amateurs, who uncovered little more than bare walls. Inside the city, whole areas look like a kind of bare ground-plan; it is the excavating done in this century that finally gives a picture of Pompeii in the round. But Pompeii is not all tombs and grim reminders. Other recent excavations add to the total impression of a vanished life that was led amid enviably beautiful surroundings. Pompeii is more than a museum; it is a number-one tourist attraction, and everything is dent to make the place as attractive as it is interesting.
