This article focuses on the book "The Letters of Edward Gibbon," edited by J.E. Norton. Somehow, somewhere, the book gives readers the conviction of a tragic, hidden self, nursed through life like an imbecile in a garret. Mostly the secret leaks through in the fact of the style. This is one place where one can say for sure, the style is the man. It is of course to Gibbon's letters to Suzanne Curchoc that one turn first, hoping for something new. Here they are again, just as they were before, set pieces of evasion.
