Powerful though it is and perceptive as it may be, the Pulitzer Price Committee raised more questions than it settled by awarding this year's honors in history to Richard Hofstadter's "The Age of Reform." The issue is not whether Hofstadter can write first rate history. He has done so recently in "The Development of Academic Freedom in the United States" and earlier in "The American Political Tradition." But he did not win the prize for either of those works. Instead, he received it for a volume which is not history and which does not match their quality.
