This article presents information on the American Association of University where Professors has reaffirmed its position that a university teacher can be ,fired only because of professional incompetence not because of political opinions expressed, or political activities pursued, outside the classroom. It did so at its 42nd annual convention at St. Louis on April 6, 1956 after long and often sharp procedural debate. The principal matter at hand was a report by a special committee set up to investigate the firings of professors who had refused to testify before Congressional committees on the subject of Communist association or who had pleaded the protection of the Fifth Amendment.
