Abstract

American Poetry: 1956

Rosenthal, M. L. | March 10, 1956 issue

The article presents a discussion on American poetry in the year 1956. American poetry today, says Malcolm Cowley in "The Literary Situation," seems to be retreating. Only fools talk sense all the time, and so perhaps Cowley will forgive for suggesting that what he says in this instance is not really sensible. Yet it is a common enough accusation. Often it is implied in allusions to a supposed tame conformity and a reliance on technical competence rather than on imaginative daring. Whether he likes it or not, anyone who claims being in the midst of a poetic Caporetto has to talk about particular poets and poems—the whole range of them, in fact.
