One had to be in provincial France during these last historic weeks to realize the immense weight of public opinion which, from the very outset, supported Premier Pierre Mendes-France's New Deal and, above all, his bid to end the war in Indo-China. Even before Mendes-France became Premier, there had been a lot of talk about the terrible losses in Indo-China. It must be said that the French provincial press sized up the state of opinion in France much quicker than some of the Paris papers, and any reservations about the new Premier soon gave way to almost unanimous approval.
