Now that the Indo-China nightmare is over, the biggest issue facing French Premier Pierre Mendes-France is European Defense Community (EDC). Because of the intense feeling aroused by the idea of re-arming Germany, he will need all his great authority in order to handle this issue in the National Assembly without wrecking his government in the process. Mendes-France is not going to risk the existence of his government and his own political future on the issue of EDC. According to him, the ratification of EDC would be a national calamity for France, but its non-ratification might be an international calamity.
