On June 7, 1954, officers of the Wisconsin Joe Must Go Club announced that the attempt to recall Senator John McCarthy in a special election had failed. Only 335,000 of the necessary 403,905 signatures had been obtained. But in the eyes of many the movement has served a useful purpose it demonstrated in many areas what McCarthyism really means and showed how the weapons of fear and intimidation are used to crush opposition to the Wisconsin junior Senator. One of the most dramatic examples took place in Green Bay, Wisconsin The victim was Robert C. Houle, a television announcer for a Green Bay station whose troubles began when he accepted the chairmanship of the Brown County Joe Must Go Club. Anonymous letters and phone calls branded him as a "Communist."
