There may be debate elsewhere about whether the economy is undergoing a recession or a "healthy, rolling readjustment," but there can be no quibbling about the way to describe what is happening in the eastern Kentucky coal-fields. Depression is the right word. Nearly one-third of Kentucky's miners are laid off, and only a few of the others are still working full time. Here in the Big Sandy held sonic 7,000 persons are on relief in Pike County alone. They come out of the hills and hollows into this mountain-locked town for food once or twice a week, gathering iii front of a little white building beside the Chesapeake and Ohio tracks.
