This article focuses on the book "The British New Towns Policy: Problems and Implications," by Lloyd Rodwin. The lesson of the book is modestly tucked away in Appendix A, "The Achilles Heel of British Town Planning." Planning should not be dominated by architects, engineers and surveyors. It is a social field. It requires the collaboration of the sociologist, the economist, the political scientist on the national, scale. It demands the services of the artist and, even in a totally new settlement, those of the historian.
