This article critically appraises the book "The Music Crept by Me Upon the Waters," by Archibald MacLeish. What seems more impressive than minor flaws, however, is the fact that under MacLeish handling the moon does rise from something like an original sea of time, and that its mood enters and possesses Nor should it be forgotten that the piece plays well, as has already been attested by its success first as a reading for a private audience and later as a full-scale production of the Poet's Theater of Cambridge. But above all, what comes off the stage and page is a lyric, a lyric mood inseparable from the mood of such early MacLeish lyrics as "You, Andrew Marvel!," the mood of the individual consciousness haunted by the hunt of time.
