It looks increasingly as if the U.S. administration would fail to carry out one of its clearest and easiest commitments, statehood for Hawaii and Alaska. The Republican platform was specific. It favored "immediate statehood for Hawaii; statehood for Alaska under an equitable enabling act." Three years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared "Quick admission of Alaska and Hawaii to statehood will show the world that 'America practices what it preaches.'" This sound and stimulating contribution to contemporary thought was particularly pertinent in view of the international situation.
