This article focuses on the natural reserves of the U.S. The U.S. has proved reserves of 20 billion barrels of oil compared with a production last year, the war-time peak, of 1.7 billion. Thus even allowing for a consider- able drop in consumption, it would appear that, without some major new discoveries, domestic supplies of oil will be running low in fifteen to twenty years. Nevertheless, the U.S. still has 36 per cent of the known oil re- serves of the world-not too bad a share for a country with under 7 per cent of the world's population. It has been reported that the U.S. is depleting its natural resources so rapidly as to endanger its national existence.
