"Little America" in Morocco

In part, the demand for American evacuation in Morocco represents an emotional reaction to forty-four years of colonial rule. Although Morocco gained formal independence in 1956, French, Spanish and American military forces are still present there, and vast territories that were legally Moroccan in 1912 remain under foreign control. But the conditions in which the U.S. bases were established there mark them ineradicably with the stigma of colonialism. The U.S., of course, unlike France and Spain, is not resented as a former colonial power. Moroccans refer to the bases as "Little Americas."
