The article highlights the importance of defense industry in the economy of Detroit, Michigan. Korean armistice marked the end good days for Detroit and Michigan. A whole new set of forces has been operating to revise the impact of the war economy on this area, including the expansion and decentralization of the auto industry, the increasing diversification of General Motors Corp. and the changes in the nature of war weapons. Reliable estimates suggest that 150,000 jobs have been lost to Michigan in the last five years due to the cancellation of defense contracts and shifts in the character of defense spending.
