The article highlights the dependence of the economy of Santa Monica, California on defense industry. Santa Monica's largest taxpayer is the Douglas Aircraft Co. Santa Monica is dependent on its revenue to such an extent the when Douglas' contracts diminish, all of residents of Santa Monica are agonized. Early in December 1959, the Southern California officials of the International Association of Machinists decided that layoffs at Douglas, both in Santa Monica and in other nearby Douglas plants at El Segundo and Torrance, were getting too heavy and lasting too long for comfort. Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce asked Congressmen to check on discrimination against Douglas.
