The article highlights the importance of defense contracts for the economy of Saint Louis, Missouri. For six months preceding December 17, 1959 officials of the McDonnell Aircraft Corp., biggest single employer in the state and a booming form for two decades, were in a state of acute apprehension. It had a new fighter plane for the U.S. Navy, which the Navy liked very much, but it also liked a new fighter developed by another company of Texas. Had the contract been lost, the company would have been forced to lay off 6,000 employees. The loss of 6,000 jobs would have been a serious economic blow to Saint Louis.
