The article focuses on the effect of defense programs on the U.S. economy. More than sixty per cent of the U.S. federal budget is earmarked for missiles, hydrogen-bombs and other devices. The figure of $40 billion annually comprises the so-called direct defense expenditures which includes procurement of aircraft, missiles, military research and development and ships; expenditures for the Atomic Energy Commission; and military pay and allowances. The $60 million estimate includes pensions for veterans, foreign aid and interest on the federal debts, the bulk of which were contracted in the World War II.
