This article presents information on political conditions in the Middle East. Two parallel competitions are taking place, regardless of Arab propaganda and the cold war. Two versions of Arab unity are competing, each championed by erstwhile rivals, Iraq and Egypt, each trying to use East and West as pawns. For Syria and Egypt, the dream of Arab unity lies in the direction of strong centralized rule and they have set the example in the United Arab Republic under Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
