In this article, the author talks about the book "The State of the Nation," by John Dos Passos. One of the liveliest places in the U.S., by Dos Passos's account, is the Northwest, the land of Grand Coulee, where the great dam and the cheap and seemingly endless power it generates have given the American dream a new lease of life. As one reads one almost forgets that the rationale of this vast manifestation of energy, initiative and skill, of this new surge of the frontier spirit, is the most destructive war in history.
