This article presents information on various events related to the government's administration and citizens in the U.S. in 1944. More and more people are turning to the consolation of philosophy. Publishers report steadily increasing sales of such authors as Plato, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, William James, Henri Bergson, Thomas Brown and Saint Augustine. A naval lieutenant, born in Florida, has been relieved of his command for addressing a group of African American sailors to whom he was lecturing as "you niggers." The policemen of Long Beach, California, having been assured by the city attorney that it is legal for them to join a union, have organized and elected officers.
