The article focuses on issues related to the statehood of Puerto Rico. The movement to make Puerto Rico the fifty-first state has become vigorous and vocal to the extent that it can no longer be ignored. All the arguments that once blocked the admission of Hawaii and Alaska apply to Puerto Rico, it is non-contiguous, it is non-continental, it is not Anglo-Saxon and it is vital to the national defense. Unlike Alaska and Hawaii, Puerto Rico would enter the Union with considerable legislative power. Since being admitted to the Union has always been essentially a political matter, the politics of Puerto Rico's position are pertinent and interesting.
