The article presents the author views regarding prisons as he had completed a six-month prison term for having refused to testify about his political beliefs and associations before the U.S. House Un-American Activities Committee. In a prison one is deprived of many satisfactions, a glass of wine, curtains, a chance to make choices and plans, one is not free to travel or to vote. It is clear that many convicts objectively get out of touch with their free life. Another unpleasantness of incarceration is the custodial officers. Prisoners are astonishingly various. Some prisoners don't feel like forming friendships in the temporary and unpleasant prison community.
