Spain is a country of thirty million people and 195,000 square miles which include separate provinces as different in tone and character as the North, South, East and West are different in the United States. The author was mainly in Madrid and the cities of Andalusia, the southern Spain which is the poorest and the most backward part of the country. Spain for the author began — as it begins for so many Spaniards now — in France, where the author met with a group of exiles who sit in the outdoor cafes of Paris and hold the political discussions which are outlawed in their own country.
