The article focuses on the socio-economic conditions of Luxemburg. Luxemberg is a small but active member of Western Europe with post-war problems much like those of its neighbors. It had 10,000 killed in the war, a high figure for a population of 300000 and the Rundstedt offensive at the end of 1944 caused great destruction. But thanks to sums put into the country's iron-and-steel industry, Luxemburg is today the fourth-largest producer of steel in Western Europe after Great Britain, Germany and France with an annual output of more than three million tons of steel and three million tons of pig iron. In the early part of 1950 the Luxemburg steel industry was threatened with a slump, but the Korean War caused business to look up.
