Nepal: Fairy Tale in Technicolor

Nepal's fugitive king and a few hundred of its more articulate and aggressive political exiles have managed to raise the curtain on the incredibly medieval rule in that mountain-locked Himalayan kingdom. The problem of Nepal is not simply which king to recognize, the forty-six year old Tribhuvana Bir Bikram Shah Dev, now a fugitive in New Delhi, or his three year old grandson, Dhiraja Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, who is still in Nepal's capital Kathmandu. It is also whether Nepal, under any feudal overlord, even one in control of 25,000 Gurkha troops who give him dog-like loyalty, will serve as a buffer against communism if it spreads through bordering Tibet.
