From the moment the United Nations forces crossed the Thirty-eighth Parallel, with South Korean troops in the lead, the danger of Chinese intervention was foreseen by informed observers. The Indians in particular had been warned by their ambassador at Peking that the Chinese would probably move into North Korea from Manchuria if the United Nations armies moved in from the South. Indian diplomats in the Western capitals and at Lake Success passed on this information, and Sir Benegal N. Rau, permanent Indian delegate at Lake Success, urged an attempt at conciliation before the drive into North Korea began.
