The Making of a Liberal

The article comments on the U.S. Senator Herbert H. Lehman. Lehman had no illusions about what he was doing. He told the Senate that his conscience will be easier, though he realizes his political prospects will be more difficult. His action was the climax of an exceptionally useful first year in the Senate. Like many things he had done earlier in his career, it attracted less attention than it deserved. His debut as a legislator last winter shattered this myth. He plunged headlong into debate and the introduction of legislation. He offered a strengthened rent-control law and fought for middle-income housing.
